AMP for Crohn's Diseases

By Robin Brain

One of the diseases of bowel is known as the disease of Crohn. It leads to a serious infection in the stomach. It can affect any organ which lies between the food pipes till the anus of the human body. This disease is very serious and it can affect the patient's health severely. It is a type of disease which is permanent in nature and will exist throughout the life of the patient. One striking feature about this disease is that it does not lead to death.

This disease is more seen in the developed countries in comparison to the other developing and under-develop nations. Since the developed countries face increased pollution due to developed technology the people there are more exposed to various varieties of micro-organisms. It is a fact that the women who are Caucasian are more susceptible to such a disease. The primary and initial cause of such a disease is still an unexplored and is not known to doctors. But many of the researchers and experts say that the main cause can be a particular type of virus. The specialists also say that the main root can also be the arthritis of rheumatoid. Therefore, it is said that this disease is self resistant.

A type of bacterium known as MAP which stands for mycobacterium avium which is a species of paratuberclosis and this bacterium is found in every human being. The doctors say that in a patient of the disease Crohn this bacterium is much higher. The excess presence of this bacteria results in the disease Crohn. This also leads to the unstable working of the immune system which protects us from the attack of foreign material.

The most common symptoms which are faced by the patients of Crohn disease are a lot of pain in the abdomen, regular motion in the small intestine, frequent loose motions, and early tiredness of body. In some cases this disease also results in tension in the social life if the person and constant worry in mind. The doctors say that this disease can occur at any age of the human life. It is also said that it is generally observed in people of age group fifteen years to thirty years. It is also said that this disease can also occur in the later years of human life. In the old age these diseases this disease also occurs in mishmash with the various other diseases like the heart disease, diabetes and many others.

Pain in joints is also a common symptom of this problem. Doctors usually before treating this type of patients' primarily get an x-ray done of the colon. More over tests such as stool, blood and liver are also very important in this treatment.

Treatment and how to cure colitis effectively

The most vital and effective treatment of colitis is the use of antibiotics and a good inflammatory drugs. Cures For Gout

By Ellery Goldsmith

Gout can be a painful and inconvenient condition. Anyone who has it would naturally want to look for effective cures for gout. These days though, one should be even more careful about using just any potential cure. Here are some important tips that can help you find the right treatment for gout:

Be Careful of Miracle Cures

It is true that not every medicine for gout can be effective for all patients. It is also true that finding effective medical cures for gout may take a lot of effort and visits to the doctor. Medicines can also have some side effects. This is probably why more and more people are turning to natural products and methods of dealing with gout.

There are real products and remedies that may actually work but one should be careful. There are also some manufacturers who are just simply riding the wave of some initial clinical study about natural cures for gout. In other words, some products dish out purely empty claims. These products may not only fail to cure your gout but they can also delay proper treatment and may make your condition worse.

Do Some Research

The best way to find the most effective cures for gout is to find out for yourself. Before believing in any product or remedy claim, do your own research online. Find out what studies clearly show which remedies really have a potential to work. You should also make it a habit to read numerous product reviews. Many users will truthfully tell you which cures for gout are hoaxes. Most importantly, make it a point to look out for government warnings about disreputable products.

Look for Good Doctors

You should only seriously consider cures for gout after taking them up with your doctor. It may be dangerous to pursue a cure that hasn't been sanctioned by your doctor. You may be using medications that could interact with some remedies that you want to try. This could result in a more serious medical concern. Some gout patients may also have far more serious conditions that require special attention. These include those whose high uric acids levels have led to kidney problems.

If you have second thoughts about your doctor's opinion, then try asking for a second or even a third opinion.

Take Your Treatment Seriously

If you are taking gout medicines, then you have to help them work effectively. You should take your medicines exactly as indicated and as frequently as required. This will at least give your medications a chance to kick in. This is also the only way for your doctor to effectively determine if one kind of medicine works for you or not.

Discipline is the Key

Whether you opt for medical or natural cures, they will both work less effectively if you also do not actively seek to prevent gout attacks. Even the most effective medicines will fail if you continue to eat or do what is specifically prohibited. Eating too much red meat, organ meat, beans and shellfish for example may result in higher chances of a gout attack. Not managing one's weight is also a factor that can go against your search for effective cures for gout.

Digestive Disorders & Diseases

By Robin Brain

Many people undergo from one or the other of digestive problems during their life span. It may be the ordinary and less severe digestive system problems. They are characterized as ill-tempered constipation and heartburn. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, Digestive problems and diseases exaggerated more than 65 to 75 million people of Americans in 2000. In the year 2004, 32000 deaths were certified due to digestive disorder system problems and diseases.

More than 2700 deaths were there because of GERD. According to records 900 deaths occurred due to Chrome's and ulcerative colitis, which are considered to be digestive problems called diseases of bowel disorders and 25 are occurred due to ill-tempered bowel. Ill-tempered syndrome of bowel is another one of the digestive system problems that are cured and controlled by using dietetic supplement and making food and living style changes, together with stress control.

In the year 1989-1990 about 27% of population of United States had suffered from symptoms of reflux, more than once a week. It occurs due to irregular heartburn, which is the most common seen among all digestive problems. Currently according to a study about 30% of all Americans are suffering from indigestion more than once a month. In the year 2003-2004 about750, 555 of the world population were brought to hospital due to their acid reflux problems and other esophageal problems. There is nothing statisticstal available on the amount of money spend per year in the treatment of the digestive organism disorders and reflux. This could be due to the fact that many people get their treatment from these digestive problems from the contradict medicines or other home made processes of treatment or heal.

Statistics exist for the total amounts of prescriptions made for some or the other digestive system problems and diseases. About 2.5 million prescriptions by the doctors were made for ill-tempered bowel symptom in the year1990. One of the most surprising parts is that in the total population who took prescription from the doctors for their medication women were counted to be the maximum. More than million people prescripts were been made in 1990 for getting relief from constipation. Chronic constipation is sometimes an indication of other digestive system disorders. Some of the most common digestive disorders and problems can be easily restricted and then treated. If these problems are left unprocessed most of them can lead to many uncontrollable health problems.

An Acid Reflux Diet - How It Works To Cure Acid Reflux

By Gilbey Scott

Understanding how an acid reflux diet can affect daily living can be a turning point. Food and eating play a big role in this and making it work and it is something you can take control of. Have you ever had the idea that there are helpful foods and those that add little or nothing to the nutritional balance? Let's examine acid reflux, which by its very name identifies the problem and suggests the cure.

The acid that causes the spill of acid, or reflux from the stomach comes from a defective valve that connects the stomach and the food pipe. This can be a temporary condition brought on by certain foods that can relax this valve. It can be caused by overeating; or eating hard to digest foods - meat for instance; or even poor posture. An acid reflux diet can lessen the symptoms.

In today's fast paced world eating habits are evolving faster than the body. A typical diet is two large meals with a snack. This is like the Sumo diet or famine diet. The body thinks it's doing the right thing by saving everything. What is being saved are mostly acidic foods, packed into fat and tissue cells for later use. Eating several smaller meals has the exact opposite effect as eating the typical two large meals.

What would be more helpful, as an acid reflux diet, would be several smaller meals, made up primarily of dark leafy green vegetables and dark colored fruit. Plant foods like these contain a lot of healthy minerals that the body needs, especially if you've been suffering from acid reflux for a while. Body reserves are probably low and can be replenished with a diet like this.

Calcium is one of the primary needs of a body with acid reflux problems. There could very likely be a deficiency, if you have a typical North American diet and don't take supplements.

A gastric reflux diet should be rich in plant foods, dairy products, as well as fortified soy milk, orange juice, tofu, sardines and canned fish. Along with this should be regular servings of nuts, berries and whole grains. A variety of foods is the best medicine, enabling the body to successfully complete the hundreds of processes it go through to maintain good health. What should be reduced significantly are meat and meat products. Although an efficient source of protein most diets require only a fraction of this protein.

Think of a gastric reflux diet like this as an investment in the future of your health. A diet dominated by fruits, vegetables, dairy products and whole grains can provide much of what is need to build and repair a body that has been suffering the ill effects of over acidity.

Begin a new life with the right Acid Reflux Diet.

Types of Hemroids or Hemorrhoids

By Kandpal Subhash

There are basically four types of hemroids that is internal, external, prolapsed and bleeding hemorrhoids

Internal hemroids occur inside the anus and rectum, from where they can cause a lot of uneasiness and inflammation.

External hemroids appear on the outside of the anus, especially around the anal opening. They too can cause a lot of discomfort because of constant friction with clothes, etc.

Prolapsed hemroids basically represent a later stage in the development cycle of internal hemroids. When the latter become too bulky due to clogging of the veins with blood they begin to sag and consequently protrude from the anus.

Bleeding hemroids are also a more severe form or stage of internal hemorrhoids characterized by profuse bleeding.

How can hemroids be treated?

There are several methods of treating hemorrhoids and they include temporary remedies as well as longer lasting ones. The common ones are:

Band Ligation

This method of treating hemorrhoids involves blocking the flow of blood to the excessive growth or lump using a rubber band. Your medical practitioner will show you how.

Injection Therapy

This method involves injecting the affected area with hardening agents which stop circulation and reduce the size of the hemroids. It is good for treating multiple hemorrhoids.

Coagulation

This method is recommended for treating small hemorrhoids. It involves using electric current or infrared light to burn off the hemorrhoids. With continuous treatment hemorrhoids shrink and finally disappear.

Hemroids surgery

A surgical operation is used to remove the hemorrhoids while the patient is under anesthesia.

Creams and other medical products

There are a number of creams and other medications available on the market for the treatment of hemorrhoids. Your medical practitioner will guide you accordingly regarding which ones are best for your type of hemroids.

Questions and Answers About Headache and Migraine

By Tamer Shaban

What Is a Headache?

According to the pocket Oxford medical dictionary:

"A Headache is a continuous pain in the head"

This pain may be varies in duration, intensity and distribution. You may find the pain in front or behind or in one side or both sides of the head. We all get Headache sometime, but it varies from person to person according to individual's social and occupational level. Stress is a common cause of various diseases including headache.

What is a Migraine?

Also According to the pocket Oxford medical dictionary:

'Migraine is a recurrent throbbing headache often with nausea and visual disturbance."

Migraine is a type headache usually occurs in one side of the head with or without occurrence of symptoms before headache, we call these symptoms (aura) which are "disturbance of vision, may be temporary loss of vision, nausea, vomiting and increase sensitivity to light.

How we feel headache and migraine?

Briefly, the brain does not contain pain nerves but we feel pain from nerves outside the brain which are located along the superficial area of head and in the muscle layer.

What are types or classification of headache?

If we simplify The International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition this will classify types of headache into three types or classes:

1-Primary Headache: This section contains: Migraine and headache due to tension

2-Secondery Headache: This section contains:

• causes related to the brain such as: head trauma, vascular and non vascular
• causes due to disease inside the brain such as tumor
• causes due to using or stop using some drugs and substances

3-Neurolagia and other headache

This section contains causes due to inflammation or irritation of nerves

What are types or classification of Migraine?

Typically we found there are two mainly types:

• Migraine with aura which is characterized by symptoms before migraine headache occurs, these symptoms is very short in duration as visual disturbance and followed by headache and sometimes without headache.
• Migraine without aura is characterized by its recurrence and occurrence without the above symptoms.

There are other types or subtypes we don't discuss here

Muscle Weakness - A Sign Of Myasthenia Gravis

By Sharon A Bell

In myasthenia gravis, certain muscles tire quickly, especially those of the face, lips, tongue, neck and throat. The usual victims are women below 40 or older than 70 but the disease may occur at any age.

"The disorder affects only the function of your muscles, and the muscle weakness you experience improves when you rest. Myasthenia gravis may cause double vision, drooping eyelids, difficulties with speech, chewing, swallowing and breathing, as well as weakness of your limbs," said the Mayo Clinic.

Its cause is unknown but it is associated with thyroid disorders and thymonas (tumors of the thyroid gland). The symptoms of myasthenia gravis are due to the lack of acetlycholine which is needed for the transmission of nerve impulses to muscle fibers.

"In myasthenia gravis, there's a breakdown in communication between your nerves and your muscles. The culprit is your immune system. For unknown reasons, myasthenia gravis causes your immune system to produce antibodies that block or destroy many of the receptor sites for acetylcholine in your muscles. With fewer receptor sites available, your muscles receive fewer nerve signals, resulting in weakness," explained the Mayo Clinic.

"It's believed that the thymus gland, a part of your immune system located in the upper chest beneath the breastbone, may trigger or maintain the production of these antibodies. Large in infancy, the thymus is small in healthy adults. But, in some adults with myasthenia gravis, the thymus is abnormally large. Some people also have tumors of the thymus. Usually, thymus gland tumors are noncancerous (benign)," the Mayo Clinic added.

Symptoms may appear gradually or suddenly. The first signs of the disease are weak eye closure, ptosis (dropping of the upper eyelid) and diplopia (double vision). Myasthenic patients often have blank and expressionless faces. Their speech may be slurred and their neck muscles may become too weak to support their heads.

They are usually strong in the morning and weak throughout the day. Exercise and repeated movements make their condition worse. Symptoms become severe with menstruation, emotional stress, exposure to sunlight, infections and certain medications. If the respiratory muscles are involved, patients become susceptible to pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections. Death follows when important muscles stop functioning.

Anticholinesterase drugs are given for fatigue and muscle weakness but they have many side effects like headaches, sweating, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, Surgery is another option but it doesn't work for all people.

Chronic Yeast Infection Revealed

By Linda D. Allen

Candida species are disease-inducing microbes that apparently occur in 85% of the population. They can lead to the unpleasant health condition of chronic yeast infection (chronic candidiasis). By their opportunist nature, they only lead to chronic yeast infection in certain instances.

Naturally occurring Candida exist in excess of 100 species, but only a quarter of them are recognized as causing human yeast infection. The most common strain is Candida albicans, and then Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, Candida tropicalis, and Candida parapsilosis. The yeast infection rates are: Candida albicans - about four out of five; yeast Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, and other kinds of fungi - one out of five.

Yeast microbes live in the moist and warm areas like the mouth, the vagina, the bowels and the rectum. They are typically found in a good percentage of healthy people. Held at bay by probiotics, favorable microorganisms, yeast microbes have few negative effects on a healthy person. Nevertheless, they multiply fast when infection takes hold.

Candidiasis can be quickened by particular conditions out of the ordinary. These conditions are typically determined by the subtype of the yeast infection. For example: antibiotics, pregnancy, contraceptive pills, or hormone replacement therapy may hasten vaginal candidiasis, whereas insufficient personal hygiene can bring about yeast infection in males. The process may thus be the result of abnormal concentration of yeast microbes, above all in moist and warm areas of the surface of the body. However stress or an excess of weight can also push up the chance of yeast infection. In addition, weak immunity systems can be a cause in general of continuing yeast infections due to any subtype.

The data below concern yeast infections:

1. Three out of four women suffer a vaginal candidiasis, the most often observed, at least once in their life. As many as two out of five women have recurring or long duration yeast infections.

2. According to certain research, it is the age group of 21-30 that is most at risk from chronic yeast infection, and then the age group of 11-20.

3. Whether it's physical or emotional, stress can debilitate your immune system and boost the danger to you of colds and herpes. This can favor yeast cultivation too.

4. Because the yeast microbe is most active in conditions of warmth and moisture, hot weather favors the occurrence of chronic yeast infection.

5. Candidiasis can also be brought on by particular foods such as yeast foods, refined carbohydrates, candy, dairy products (difficult to digest, lactose laden with chemicals for hormone growth as well as favoring mucus) and wines (glucose laden).

6. In research done in the last ten years of the twentieth century at New York's Long Island Jewish Medical Center, it was observed that women having consumed a cup of yogurt on a daily basis for half a year could reduce the onset of chronic yeast infections by a factor of three. The theory however lacked sufficient data as only 13 women finished the study. Other research indicates that eating live strains of lactobacillus acidophilus either as supplements or as a yogurt can help to stop yeast infections.

The subtypes of candidiasis that occur the most are:

1. Candida vaginal infections: forming inside the vulva or the vagina. This is the kind of chronic infection encountered the most often.

2. Oral thrush: developing in the mouth and most often seen in individuals with very weak immune systems, including babies.

3. Baby thrush (nappy rash): responsible for rashes around the diaper area.

4. Male yeast infection: affects the glans penis, causing a rash.

5. Paronychia (infections of the underlying tissue of the nail): this type of yeast infection habitually appears next to the fingernail.

Note that each subtype of candidiasis is of a different kind. Other candida infections can happen practically anywhere in the body, frequently in folds of the skin: under the arms or the breasts, in between toes and so forth.

In certain instances, yeast infections can attack other parts of the body. This may be indicative of serious imbalance internally of the body. However usually, candidiasis is without lasting consequence, easily remedied and do not lead to serious health conditions. In many cases, yeast infections will disappear after a time without requiring medication.

The manifestation of the symptoms of candidiasis needs professional advice from a qualified physician. Chronic yeast infections may be just a symptom of more serious problems, such as sexually transmitted diseases with similar symptoms, leukemia, diabetes and AIDS, just to give a few examples.

As excessive multiplication of Candida is the root of almost all yeast infections, failure to sort out the internal problem that is responsible for the symptom of discharge, rash or other related to Candida, will not prevent these symptoms fro recurring after a while. Although chronic yeast infections can be treated using over the counter medication or a prescription at home, remember that virtually all such infections are an alarm signal of a severe internal problem that should be correctly treated. In addition, failure to treat the internal problems causing the yeast related symptoms could also lead to severe health complications.

Surprising Facts About Male Yeast Infection

By Linda D. Allen

It is said that male yeast infection, also known as male candidiasis, is a small problem that can be handled by better personal hygiene. It's a fact that yeast infections that are neglected in males can lead to serious health complications including damage to a man's sexual organs. Symptoms of male candidiasis should be treated without waiting. Candida infections in males has not yet been well researched as a medical condition and there is a tendency to misunderstand it, so most men do not relate the problem to its symptoms and will probably neglect it. For that reason it is essential to become acquainted with male yeast infection symptoms and ways to do a proper, initial diagnosis of the condition.

The symptoms for male yeast infection symptoms can be classified into six groups:

1. Painful symptoms, including jock itch, a sensation of burning while urinating or having sex, and even (less usually) severe pain.

2. Dry skin that itches and flakes amongst other visual symptoms such as an excessively red glans penis with a thick white discharge.

3. Indigestion and digestion-related problems including constipation, recurring diarrhea, bloating and build-up of bowel gas, bad breath, etc.

4. Tiredness, lack of "punch" and sudden swings in mood.

5. Sexual dysfunction.

6. Food preferences changes, often concerning craving for candy, refined carbohydrates and so on.

The last four candidiasis classifications for males are also related to practically all other subtypes. This fact makes even more credible the widely favored philosophy of alternative medicine which affirms that candidiasis is principally an internal problem to be treated holistically and not so much as a local or external condition.

If any of the symptoms above are identified, it is best to ask for an appointment with a qualified physician for a complete examination.

If male yeast infection is diagnosed, you can opt for a conventional treatment from the scores of over the counter and prescription medicaments. However, remember that most conventional solutions will often just bring temporary relief along with many side effects. Opting for a holistic solution that deals with the internal factors responsible for yeast infection in males is much better aligned as a powerful and durable long-term solution. This way, the symptoms of male candidiasis will not only be healed and stopped, but your natural inner balance will be restored and your general health and well-being will be considerably improved.

What Is Ringworm And How Does It Effect Human Skin?

By Patnaree Sukgrarongka

Ringworm is one of the most common types of skin diseases that could happen to anyone, so you must be very careful to give the right way of treatments, otherwise, it will be very hard to cure.

Ringworm has nothing to do with its name, as the word "ringworm" may not directly represent its own meaning. The name ringworm is given to this disease because the formation of red ring occurs around the infected area on the surface of the skin which can be transmitted by having direct contact with other infected people or animals.

Normally, this condition occurs due to several types of mold-like fungus called Dermatophytes, which is known as the disease could be alive on dead cells of the body like nails and scalp. More often, it effects younger children because there are common occurrences in child care homes, schools, as well as in infant nurseries. Apart from this, the risk of this infectious disease increases more dramatically in families that have pets than others who do not have pets with them.

Ringworm that is caused by fungus can be transmitted by having direct contact or while petting, cleaning and other such contact with pets. Infection can also occur from animals such as horses, goats and cows. Moreover, the reason for the spread of ringworm is due to touch on the objects that has also been touched by infected animals or people such as upholstery, bedding, combs, towels, clothing and brushes.

Sometimes, human can be infected by ringworm when they touch contaminated soil but this case is rare. The mold-fungi causing ringworms exist for a much longer time if the soil is full of adequate nutrients. The infection of ring worm caused in people is much more likely to come about from prolonged contact with heavily infected soil.

Areas where Ringworms generally appear Ringworm that appears on the scalp will first take the form of a small pimple, which keeps getting larger in area, thus leaving crusty patches or temporary baldness on the infected person. As a result, this will cause the roots of the hair to become weak and start breaking off easily and results in heavy hair loss. Ringworm may also develop in the yellowish crusty area during its occurrence.

Ringworm can also appear on the other parts of the body including feet, which may appear as red from patchy spots. This turns into expanding rashes which keep spreading on the area on which ring is developed. The severe case of ringworms leads to several patches on the skin surface which sometimes overlap each other and results in the inflammation on the effected area.

Ringworms effecting nails sometimes make the nails become more thick but weak and pale. You are suggested to consult your doctor if you have any kind of symptoms that similar to ringworm such as itchy and red spot on your skin.

Treatment This disease is fortunately very simple to identify and treat. Ringworm can be easily diagnosed by a dermatologist but sometimes the doctors may scrape few pieces of flaky infectious skin for further diagnosis under microscope for fungal detection. Then they can prescribe ring worms sufferers an anti-fungal medication to apply on the infected area to treat it, but ring worms on nails and scalp require oral anti-fungal medications in order to treat completely after determining which one is the most suitable treatment for this disease.

Maintaining good personal hygiene is also the good way to prevent yourself from ringworm. It is suggested that individuals suffering from ringworm infection to wear cotton clothing to prevent it from spreading.

Sciatica Or Piriformis Syndrome - Which Is It?

By George Best

There is considerable confusion regarding the conditions sciatica and piriformis syndrome. Some think that they are the same thing, but although they have very similar symptoms in many cases and can be present simultaneously, the underlying causes of sciatica and piriformis syndrome can be quite different.

Sciatica refers to irritation of the sciatic (often mis-spelled as syatic or psyatic) nerve, that arises from nerve roots in the lumbar spine. The most common cause of sciatic nerve irritation, or "true" sciatica is compression of one or more of its component nerve roots due to disc herniation or spinal degeneration in the lower lumbar region. Sciatica usually begins in the buttock area and, depending on the severity of the underlying nerve compression and inflammation, may extend down the entire leg to the ankle and foot.

Piriformis syndrome is sometimes called false sciatica, because instead of actual nerve irritation, it is caused by referral pain.) caused by tight knots of contraction in the piriformis muscle, which attaches to the upper femur bone and then runs across the back of the pelvis to the outside edge of the sacrum, the triangular pelvic bone at the base of the spine. The symptoms of piriformis syndrome are very similar and may be indistinguishable from true sciatica.

In some cases, piriformis syndrome may cause true sciatic nerve irritation, as the sciatic nerve may run underneath or even through the middle of the piriformis, so contraction of the piriformis may produce sufficient compression of the sciatic nerve to produce actual nerve symptoms. This is one of the main sources of confusion when it comes to distinguishing true sciatica from piriformis syndrome.

As mentioned earlier, the symptoms of true sciatica are very similar to piriformis syndrome. Both cause pain, tingling, burning, "electrical shock" sensations, and/or numbness down the leg, often all the way to the foot. In addition, both sciatica and piriformis syndrome tend to be at least partially related to biomechanical functional problems in the joints of the back and pelvis and they may even be present simultaneously in the same person, so it an be difficult to tell them apart.

But since the most effective treatment for the two conditions varies significantly, it is important to determine the correct diagnosis if at all possible. In most cases there is an easy way to distinguish between sciatica and piriformis syndrome.

In most cases, sciatica can be differentiated from piriformis syndrome with a couple of simple test maneuvers. To begin, from a seated position, one straightens the knee on the side of sciatic pain, holding the leg out straight and parallel to the floor, and if this position causes an increase in symptoms, it is a good indicator of true sciatica.

The second maneuver is done in two parts. First, from the sitting position one bends the leg and pulls the knee on the painful side towards the same-side shoulder. In all but the most severe cases, there is usually no major increase in pain in this position. The second part of the maneuver is to pull the knee toward the opposite side shoulder. An increase in the sciatica-like symptoms is a strong indication of piriformis syndrome.

It is important to distinguish between sciatica and piriformis syndrome, because the treatment for the conditions varies, and getting the diagnosis right typically leads to more effective treatment.

How Can Carpal Tunnel Injury Be Prevented?

By Gloria Chang

We all know someone struggling to cope with the agony of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. But did you know that taking a few simple, preventative measures is our best defense against suffering the agonizing pain of carpal tunnel?

Orthopedic specialists recommend that the best preventative measure is wearing mildly-compressive therapy garments specially designed to align your hands and wrists when working at repetitive tasks by correctly supporting wrist movements. This compressive support is particularly important during those activities which require up-and down or side-to-side movements of your wrist.

Further, when working at your computer your wrists should be approximately parallel with your elbows maintaining a 90 degree angle to your keyboard or work surface. Choose specially-designed supportive therapy garments, such as thermal health gloves and wrist body bands to encourage your hands to maintain a natural, relaxed and open posture when using the mouse. It's also important that you don't grip the mouse between your thumb and little fingers. Generally, wrist rests should be avoided because of the awkward position they create for your lower arm and it's best to keep the mouse close to your keyboard to help maintain a relaxed upper body posture. This also encourages you to use your entire arm to move your mouse rather than wrist-straining side-to-side movements.

Physiotherapists suggest you avoid resting your wrists on hard surfaces for extended periods, that you choose tools that are ergonomically designed for ease of use and to change hands regularly during repetitive tasks. Activities such as writing, typing, those that involve forceful or repetitive finger or wrist action and the use of vibrating power tools can also increase your risk of developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

In the workplace, regularly perform gentle hand stretching exercises, be sure to take frequent rest breaks, and most importantly, wear supportive therapy garments to maintain optimum wrist position and avoid tendon strain. Studies show that adapting your workplace conditions and job demands to your own capabilities will also help reduce your risk of developing carpal tunnel injury. Further, desk and chair height, workstations, the position of your computer keyboard and the tasks you perform should all be individually adjusted to encourage your wrists to maintain a healthy and natural position.

It is also worthwhile knowing that some health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, poor circulation and being over-weight may make you more susceptible to developing carpal tunnel injury. Therapy garments are effective pain management tools for these serious health complaints, too.

So, simply paying attention to these very easy strategies can help you prevent the occurrence of this debilitating and painful injury.

Naturopathic Treatment Fibromyalgia

By Charlene Nuble

Fibromyalgia can be difficult to deal with if you have to think about work, office, and family. In general, people with fibromyalgia have a constellation of different pains, which can affect the joints, bones, or muscles, and which can spread throughout the body. These pains can be difficult to treat together, which is why different painkillers, anti-depressants, and even anti-seizure drugs are recommended for people with fibromyalgia. Under naturopathic treatment fibromyalgia can also be eased.

Under naturopathic treatment fibromyalgia patients learn how to use their muscles again. Fibromyalgia often affects people who spend a lot of time sitting down at their computers, with bad posture, little movement, and a lot of stress. This can pinch nerves and make muscles swell, thereby causing pain. With gentle naturopathic treatment fibromyalgia patients start by stretching their muscles; then move on to gradual exercise, such as swimming and light aerobics.

Along with naturopathic treatment fibromyalgia patients also have to change their lifestyle. They need to relax more often, and they can accomplish this by sleeping more. Other techniques include applying hot compresses to key sore areas of the body, such as the back, shoulders, arms, and knees. Massages are also recommended, and chiropractic methods can work best for people who have no time to attend exercise classes or spend some time meditating.

In addition to physical naturopathic treatment fibromyalgia patients have to watch their diet. They will need to consume fewer stimulants and more fresh vegetables and fruits. They will also need to drink more water and consume less fat. If you are interested in such treatments, talk to your doctor and ask for more information.

The Health Risks of Secondhand Smoke

By John Scherrer

The Health Risks of Second Hand Smoke

The majority of the population can identify with a situation in which one is enjoying a nice meal or a ball game when they are suddenly overcome with the unpleasant odor of tobacco. This may not seem to affect some people, some may simply be annoyed, while others who are particularly sensitive to the effects may become enraged. Whichever category one may fall under, they all have one thing in common: health is at risk. Whether sensitive to smoke or not, no one can escape the harmful, even potentially fatal, effects.

Effects of Secondhand Smoke

According to the American Lung Association, "Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), is a mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar and the smoke exhaled from the lungs of smokers."1 Even when smokers take cigarette breaks in an assigned location, once the cigarette is crushed, they are free to roam wherever they please, and they continue to breathe out the toxic fumes. Though smoking in a designated area, these smokers will intoxicate anyone exposed to them after their smoking session.

Many unfortunate results arise from this habit, for the toxins do not only exist during the actual smoking of tobacco products but remain in the air even hours after the last puff. Everyday victims often inhale these "leftovers" involuntarily and unknowingly. While it may be widespread knowledge that cancer can be contracted through tobacco smoke due to the cancer-causing agent Carcinogen A, it is also true that asthma, respiratory infections, and other illnesses such as colds and bronchitis can arise from this dangerous activity.

Any exposure to ETS, despite the duration, is harmful to the body. There is no safe allotment of exposure. The American Lung Association explains that, "Short exposures to second hand smoke can cause blood platelets to become stickier, damage the lining of blood vessels, decrease coronary flow velocity reserves, and reduce heart rate variability, potentially increasing the risk of heart attack."1 Research is also being conducted on a possible link between ETS and a hardening of the arteries causing strokes.

Statistics

Most people understand to some degree that inhaling tobacco in any form is harmful to the body. In fact, of the 4,000 chemicals in tobacco, more than 250 are harmful, and at least 50 are known to cause cancer. The American Lung Association found that, "Secondhand smoke causes approximately 3,400 lung cancer deaths and 46,000 heart disease deaths in adult nonsmokers in the United States each year."1 The heart and lungs are the organs typically affected by tobacco inhalation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that, "Nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work increase their heart disease risk by 25 - 30% and their lung cancer risk by 20 - 30%."3

Smokers must beware of whom their actions are affecting. They could not only be slowly killing themselves but innocent bystanders as well, and adults are certainly not the only ones damaged by the effects of ETS. The American Lung Association goes on to say that, "Secondhand smoke is especially harmful to young children. ETS is responsible for between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in infants and children under 18 months of age, resulting in between 7,500 and 15,000 hospitalizations each year, and causes 430 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) deaths in the United States annually."1 The National Cancer Institute explains that exposure to ETS "slows the growth of children's lungs and can cause them to cough, wheeze, and feel breathless."4 Additionally, pregnant women with exposure to these poisons have a heightened risk of giving birth to low weight babies.

Everyone exposed to ETS is at risk for contracting diseases, but some are particularly agitated by these toxins, such as asthmatics. The American Cancer Society reports that ETS "increases in the number and severity of asthma attacks in about 200,000 to 1 million children who have asthma."2 Smokers obviously have no innate sense of whether or not a bystander suffers from asthma, and they should not pose the threat of causing an attack. Additionally, these toxins immediately affect the heart and blood vessels despite the amount of exposure.

The dangers of ETS are real and widespread among the population. It is unfortunate when people who are taking the proper measures to maintain good health are powerless to prevent this disease-causing invasion.

What Can You Do?

Once informed about the dangers associated with ETS, it is difficult to ignore the next deep breath of toxic fumes that are inhaled when we pass a smoker in a public area. Anyone can lobby for change in this unhealthy practice. Fifteen states have already passed legislations to ban smoking in any public place including restaurants and sporting events. Several other states are in the process of passing similar laws. ETS is becoming less acceptable in our society. For those states that continue to permit this practice, individuals can take matters into their own hands to prevent this toxic invasion from spreading to their facilities.

NO-SMOKING SIGNS can be purchased and displayed where smokers typically congregate, leaving no opportunity for carcinogens to invade non-smoking, health-conscious citizens. Smoke-free areas, particularly restaurants, are very attractive to consumers with asthma, allergies, or extra sensitivity to smoke. It is extremely beneficial for such people to have a safe haven where they know they will be free of not only an irritating, but also harmful environment.

What Is The Ulceration Process?

By Mike Selvon

Suffering from an ulcer, any place on the body, is not a great experience. They are painful, uncomfortable and can be a danger to your health if left untreated. It is estimated that 1 in 10 Americans will get such a disease this year alone. You may think that you know what this disease is, how it is diagnosed and what treatment options are available, but you could be wrong.

Ulcers vary according to where they are located, such as mouth ulcers, foot ulcers and all areas in between, as there are different factors that contribute to the process of ulceration. The more you know, the better you will be prepared.

The ulceration can take place either in the gastrointestinal tract, which is relevant to a stomach ulcer, or it can occur on the skin from a pressure sore. The ulcers in the stomach begin with the mucous lining that is between the stomach acids and the sensitive inner lining of the tract.

When the mucous is gone, the ulcer is formed. At this point every time the acid from the stomach comes into contact with the sore; pain results. Stomach ulcers can be malignant, whereas duodenal ulcers are most often benign.

Treatment for a H pylori ulcer is a three fold slam. It starts off with the doctors seeing where the disease is located. It will be a gastric, a stomach, or a duodenal ulcer. They will do this either by an x-ray or by an endoscope. If they do it by an endoscope, then they will perform a small biopsy and test the tissue.

If it comes back that the H pylori bacteria is the root cause of the disease, then the doctor will prescribe a triple therapy ulcer treatment. This treatment consists of an antibiotic, such as amoxicillin or metronidazole, a proton pump inhibitor, such as pantoprazole, and clarithromycin.

Smoking, stress, blood type and spicy foods are not the culprits behind ulceration. However, Helicobacter pylori are a cause of gastric ulcers. If you do have H pylori ulcers, then you will need to take an antibiotic along with the prescribed medication for healing the actual ulcer itself. The antibiotic will clear up the bacterium and speed along the process of leaving your ulcer where it belongs; in the past.

Disease Management - How is Parkinson's Disease Treated?

By Hilary Basile

Parkinson's disease (also known as Parkinson disease or PD) is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that often impairs the sufferer's motor skills and speech. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement (bradykinesia) and, in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement (akinesia).

There is currently no cure for Parkinson's disease. The goals of treatment are to minimize disability, reduce the possible side effects of drug therapy, and help the patient maintain the highest possible quality of life.

Prescription drugs help manage symptoms, but they can't stop the disease from progressing. When a drug no longer effectively controls symptoms, another drug may be added to existing therapy. Disease management is highly individualized and is best determined by a doctor who specializes in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Surgery remains the only option for patients with severe or fast-progressing Parkinson's disease when other therapies have failed. This may involve:

  • Pallidotomy. Pallidotomy involves an electric probe used to destroy a small portion of the brain that is overactive and is thought to cause the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
  • Thalamotomy. Thalamotomy involves the removal of the thalamus region of the brain (the thalamus is responsible for involuntary movements; destroying it prevents involuntary movements).
  • Thalamic stimulation. Thalamic stimulation is a procedure where an electrode wire is inserted into the thalamus. The other end of the wire is connected to a pulse generator, and the generator is placed under the skin in the chest area. This device can produce the benefit of thalamotomy without causing wound or scars on the skin and has shown to be very effective in management of tremor in Parkinson's disease.
  • Deep brain stimulation. Deep brain stimulation is an alternative procedure used to destroy small regions of the brain. A thin electrode implanted into the brain blocks brain waves that can cause uncontrollable movements. This procedure must be continued lifelong. It is especially useful in patients that have severe symptoms associated with tremor, involuntary movements (dyskinesia), and problems with gait.

Parkinson's Disease - The Cause And Symptoms

By Lulie Swanepoel

Parkinson's Disease, or PD, is most common amongst the elderly. In most cases, Parkinson's cannot be predicted or prevented. The disease is a movement disorder characterised by the loss of or slow physical movement, trembling of the arms, hands, legs, jaw or head, stiffness of the limbs and impaired balance.

The non-motor aspect of PD
Apart from the physical symptoms, patients suffering from PD also show signs of mood disturbances. As much as 90% of PD patients suffer from anxiety that consequently leads to depression, abulia or apathy. Parkinson's sufferers have noted experiencing sleep disturbances causing excessive daytime drowsiness or insomnia.

Cognitive disturbances include dementia in almost 40% of Parkinson's sufferers. They suffer from short term memory loss, lack of impulse control, prioritising and evaluating the clarity of surrounding situations, varying time awareness and lack of social consciousness. These symptoms of the physical and emotional seem to worsen over time.

In some cases, as the condition worsens, symptoms such as lack of facial expression, speech impediments, difficulty in swallowing, constipation, bladder problems, sweating, sexual difficulties and alterations in their sense of smell.

Disease vs. Syndrome
Although Parkinson's is referred to as a disease, its definite cause has not been specified. Common causes that have been indicated as being responsible for causing Parkinson's Disease include genetics, toxins, cerebral anoxia, head trauma and drug related issues. Despite these causes, an ailment qualifies as a disease because of a collection of signs and symptoms which emerge together. In order to qualify as a disease, the problem would have to have a root cause incorporating that a single cure should work in every Parkinson's case.

Treatment
As such drugs have only been able to improve the symptoms, but have not been able to cure the disease. Some even suggest delaying treatments as the effectiveness of the drug has a restricted lifetime. The main treatment for Parkinson's Disease has been drugs that include: Propranolol, Primidone, Anticholinergics, Selegiline, Amantadine, Levodopa, COMT inhibitors and Dopamine agonists. Levodopa is the main agent used to treat Parkinson's and is combined with carbidopa when given in a pill form.

Surgery has also been used in cases where the medication is no longer having any effect in controlling the symptoms. Alternatively, deep brain stimulation is applied. It works similarly to a pacemaker and is implanted in the chest with wires that penetrate deep into the part of the brain that controls motor function, where electrical impulses are sent. So far this has been the dominant treatment with severe cases where medication is no longer effective.

Alternative medicine and Parkinson's Disease
Alternative medicine and treatments have been incorporated into treatment of the symptoms of Parkinson's. Exercises such as Pilates, tai chi and yoga help increase body flexibility, enhancing balance and coordination. The muscles of the spine are elongated, strengthened and stabilised through the stretching movements specific to Pilates. This increases blood circulation and balance and improves posture.

Nutrients and herbs are also prescribed in a patient's diet, but this is to be used solely in conjunction with other treatments. Homeopathy is used for symptoms and can alleviate the trembling, painless paralysis, restless legs, anxiety, depression, arteriosclerosis and general restlessness. Massages help with circulation and to decrease muscle spasms, while acupuncture helps with tremors.

Manual Nerve Release technique, or MNR, has been showing great benefits for Parkinson's sufferers. Although still categorized as an alternative healing technique, Parkinson's Disease patients have experienced many benefits due to the treatment. Because MNR is also a somatic healing technique, both the physical and mental aspect of Parkinson's is treated.

With all this considered, it does show that there is hope for those suffering with Parkinson's, whether a disease or syndrome. You no longer have to suffer the symptoms and agony of this disease like before.
